The Gear I Actually Use

Primary Camera

The Canon R6 has been my main digital camera since late 2021. It has been an amazing hybrid photo and video camera. For photos its hands down the best digital camera I have ever owned. For video, it works really well but, I have run into some overheating issues occasionally. The newer version should fair better with that. If I didn't already have the original R6 I would be buying the R6 MK II.

If you are a beginner I would recommend that you get a much less expensive camera body than the R6 and if you have the budget put it into lenses instead. An entry level camera I have personally used and like is the canon R50. Its a great lightweight compact mirrorless camera that would be great to start out with or as a second camera for traveling (I'm very tempted to get one as a travel cam).

Why do I shoot Canon?

I have been in the canon ecosystem for 13+ years at this point. At the time I knew people who used canon and I could borrow lenses from them. I don't necessarily believe one brand is better than another (an argument could be made if you're a professional). However, once you've collected a lot of lenses it makes it much less attractive to switch brands, so I haven't. The one downside of canon these days is limited 3rd party lens options for Full Frame.

Gear Lists

I have several lists on B&H for the gear that I like to use for photography and videography. This includes cameras, lenses, accessories, audio equipment, and film photography equipment. Everything I list is something I have personally used except in some special cases where I may choose a newer version or a recommended alternative if the one I personally own is no longer available.

I choose to share gear via B&H since they have long been my trusted photo gear supplier. Predating my first YouTube video by many years.

Lenses

I use a lot of old canon EF lenses from the SLR and DSLR days. They still work super well. However I have slowly been building up my collection of RF mount lenses. I have yet to splurge on an RF L lens, they are incredibly expensive. Despite not having any pro RF glass I have been impressed by some of the standard lenses. With my absolute favorite being the RF 35mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM its amazing in low light, is quite sharp. Its the lens that's always in my bag at all times.
